There is always something going on in the Inner Loop area, whether it's an exhibit, festival, parade, sporting event, play, or concert. Compaq Center, located just inside the loop on Highway 59, is home to four out of Houston's five professional sports teams. The Rockets, Comets, Aeros and Thunderbears all play in Compaq Center. In addition, 1999 is the Houston Astros' last season to play in the historical Houston Astrodome, located off of Loop 610 on Kirby Dr., between Main and Fannin. Next year, the Astros will play in their brand new baseball stadium, located downtown off of Highway 59. Enron Field, which only recently received its new name, is currently under construction in downtown Houston and will open its doors in the year 2000. Meanwhile, local businessman Bob McNair continues his efforts to bring professional football back to Houston. Houston also has a vast array of cultural offerings. In
Houston's museum district, you will find the Museum of Fine Arts, which
has a large permanent collection of old world masterpieces and separate
galleries for modern works; the Museum of Natural Science; an IMAX
Theater; Houstonians love to dine and shop. Houston has an impressive list of 4- and 5-star restaurants- most of them located inside the loop or in the Galleria area. Shopping areas in River Oaks and the Village (in West University) inside the loop, and the Galleria area just outside the loop, attract people from all over the world. |
